Meet Adrienne Griffen, an accidental advocate. Her experience with postpartum depression in 2001 changed her life and provided her with a new role as an advocate with the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance for moms experiencing mental health challenges related to pregnancy and childbirth.
Super Mom: If you could choose one superpower to improve mothers' experiences, what would it be?
All moms would get enough sleep.
Magic Wand: With a magic wand, what’s the one major challenge in maternal care you’d solve?
I would ensure that all a woman's mental health -- both during and following pregnancy -- was a priority. Mental health should not be separate from physical health, especially during this vulnerable time in a woman's life. I would wave a magic wand so that everyone who interacts with pregnant and postpartum women know how to talk about mental health in a non-stigmatizing and supportive way.
Inspire Moms: What message would you send to all moms?
You can do it! There are a hundred "right" ways to be a good mom.
Boss Mom: What traits or habits do mothers have that would make them great CEOs?
Moms are super-organized, able to juggle lots of competing demands, and always looking out for their staff (i.e. their children).
Balancing Act: As a CEO and mother, what are three things you’ve done to stay grounded?
Sleep. Exercise. Drink lots of wine.
One Lesson: What’s one lesson from your mother that has impacted your life?
My mother taught me that while work is important, the family is the number one priority.
